How to Choose the Right Tile for Every Room

Not every tile suits every room, and getting this wrong is one of the most common (and costly) mistakes homeowners make. The right choice comes down to three things: how much moisture the space sees, how much foot traffic it gets, and how much slip resistance you need. Bathrooms and wet rooms need tiles rated for wet areas, with a slip resistance (R-rating) suitable for wet, bare feet. Porcelain is the safer default here because it's dense and low-porosity, so it won't absorb water and harbour mould over time. Save highly polished, glossy finishes for walls rather than floors in these rooms. Kitchens deal with spills, dropped pans, and constant foot traffic. Porcelain again performs well, and a matte or textured finish will hide everyday marks better than a high-gloss one. If you're tiling behind a hob, check the tile is rated for the heat it may be exposed to. Hallways and living areas are all about durability and appearance, since there's rarely a moisture concern. This is where you can consider larger-format tiles for a more seamless look, or natural stone effects if you want warmth underfoot. Outdoor spaces such as patios and garden paths need tiles with a frost-resistant rating and a higher slip resistance (R11 or above), since these areas get wet and are walked on in all weather.
