Matte vs Gloss: Choosing the Right Tile Finish

Beyond colour and size, a tile's finish shapes both how a room looks and how it performs day to day. Gloss finishes reflect light, which can make a room feel brighter and more spacious, and they tend to show off colour and veining (in marble-effect tiles, for example) more vividly. The trade-off is that gloss tiles show scuffs, water marks, and footprints more readily, and they're typically more slippery, so they're best used on walls or in low-moisture, low-traffic floor areas. Matte finishes are more forgiving. They hide smudges, water spots, and everyday wear far better, and they generally offer better slip resistance underfoot, which makes them a strong choice for kitchen and bathroom floors, and anywhere with children or older family members in the house. Textured finishes go a step further, with a physical surface texture (sometimes called anti-slip or structured) that provides the highest grip levels. These are the right call for wet rooms, outdoor patios, and pool surrounds, where safety underfoot matters most. A practical approach many of our customers use: gloss or polished tiles on bathroom walls to bounce light around, paired with a matte or textured porcelain in a matching or complementary tone on the floor. You get the brightness of gloss where it's safe, and the grip and practicality of matte where you need it.
